The Intersection of Hunger and Health: Policy, Community Response, and Effects of COVID-19
Presented by: Rachel Koay, MPH, RD, LD
Rachel Koay is the Chief Impact Officer at Feeding Texas, the largest hunger-relief organization in Texas. Rachel oversees the impact of programs and strategies that tackle hunger on four fronts – racial equity, social services, community health and nutrition, and special projects through the AmeriCorps VISTA Community Capacity Corp. As a public health dietitian, she is passionate about making health easier for all by addressing the root causes of hunger and illness. Her expertise comes from working with community organizations to improve health among refugees, people experiencing hunger, and children from underinvested communities.
Grassroots Advocacy and Policy Priorities for Texas RDs
Presented by: Heidi Kiehl, MS, RDN, LD, CNSC
Heidi Kiehl is an ATXRD member who lives in Round Rock. She moved to the Austin area from Santa Clara, California in June 2018. In California, she had been active in public policy in her district and at the state level, serving on the CA Academy public policy council for 15 years, during which time she coordinated numerous state policy workshops and mentored many RDs, dietetic interns, and students in grassroots advocacy. She now serves as the Texas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics State Policy Representative. Heidi currently works as a clinical manager of inpatient services for a company called Breastfeeding Success.
